The Horse Fields are the best place to spot some of the species that prefer our climate in winter. There are normally good numbers of Chaffinch feeding on the fields, with the odd Brambling. It is also popular with Little Egret, Linnet and Redwing. When it comes to Gulls, the Horse Fields, along with Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Fields and the Rugby Club, can see large numbers of all our main species, often well into three figures.
All our woodland sites tend to attract Redwing, with the Gas Holder Wood becoming increasingly popular with Goldcrest and Firecrest. On the Mayflower Park wetlands, Water Rail normally turn up, as do Common Snipe on the Derwent Floodwash.
