Butterflies
Since 2000, twenty seven species of butterfly have been spotted on the patch, including Small Heath, White-letter Hairstreak, and Brown Hairstreak. The best place to observe them is Morden Cemetery, where large flower meadows are left uncut all summer.
Dragonflies and Damselflies
The wetlands on Mayflower Park and the Derwent Floodwash are the best places to find these. We normally see all the common dragonflies every year: Emperor, Migrant Hawker, Brown Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer, Broad bodied skimmer, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter. Also, the following damselflies are regular: Beautiful Demoiselle, Azure, Common Blue, Blue tailed, Red-eyed, and Large Red.
Bats
The Horse Fields, the Beverley Brook and pools on the Hamptons are all great spots to see bats. Over the years, the following have all been recorded: Soprano Pipistrelle, Brown Long-eared, Common Pipistrelle, Leisler’s, Noctule, Daubenton’s and Serotine. A survey of Kingshill Avenue Allotments in June 2025 recorded:
- 2 passes of Soprano Pipistrelle;
- 82 passes Common Pipistrelle
- 75 passes Leisler’s bat, of which, at least 2 were those of Noctule bat
