Morden Cemetery

Originally called Battersea New Cemetery, and owned by Wandsworth Council, it sometimes gets referred to as North East Surrey Crematorium which is located onsite.

Opened in 1890, it has retained its Victorian charm and is designated a Metropolitan Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It has a good variety of trees, with scrub and woodland around the periphery. However, its reputation stems from its grassland, and flower meadows that remain uncut until autumn, which makes it a great site for butterflies and insects. A Roe deer has roamed the cemetery for many years, and hedgehogs have also been recorded.

You are likely to see most of our resident bird species here with the addition of the resident Little Owl. It is a stronghold for stock doves and Jackdaw, which breed in good numbers. Tawny Owl and Kestrel are no doubt attracted by the prey that resides in the meadows.

From Modern Cemetery you can also observe two sites that are generally closed off to the public. An area of woodland that surrounds Arthur Road Plant Nursery and the Rugby Club. It is worth checking opening hours before visiting.
