Sparrowfeld, or Sparrow Field, which comes from the Anglo-Saxon Spawrefeld (1280), is an informal name that local birdwatchers gave to our ‘patch’. It was originally an expanse of common land between the medieval villages of Morden, Cheam, Malden and Cuddington. Today, 230 acres remain, between the neighbourhoods of Worcester Park, Lower Morden, Motspur Park and Old Malden. Located within an area of Metropolitan Green Chain, Sparrowfeld has a variety of habitats and sites, with many designated Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation.

This website was created as a guide to Sparrowfeld, and the birds and wildlife that can be found there. We hope that it will be useful to experienced birdwatchers and beginners alike, and other wildlife enthusiasts. We also hope to raise awareness of the area and inspire local residents to become more involved. In particular we would like to expand our coverage beyond birds, and better protect the area.
If you have any questions, would like to get involved, or have any interesting observations to share, please get in touch.
